Watercolor by William Goodall (1757-1844). Goodall was educated at Eton and became an ordained priest of the Church Of England. He served as absentee rector at All Saints Church, Marsham, near Aylsham in Norfolk from 1787-1844. In 1788 he married the sole heiress of Dinton Hall, Buckinghamshire, making him lord of the manor and a Justice of the Peace for Bucks. A rare and important view of Canton with the American paddlewheeler "Spark", in the harbor. Tingqua, (active 1830's to 1870). Several versions of this rare view exist. The steamer "Spark" was brought to Canton by Robert Bennet Forbes in 1849. Flags above hongs are United States, Britain, and Denmark. Gouache on paper. Tingqua written twice on reverse in pencil with #12 and Canton written in ink. 7 x 10 7/8 (sight).
