| A fine Salem, MA, early Queen Anne highboy, c. 1740, walnut with maple sides. The piece was originally owned by the Stanley family of Marblehead, MA and remained in the family until the last quarter of the 20th century. Everything is original to the piece, including the brasses, with the exception of the returns, all of which were missing and recently replaced and may be removed if desired. The finish is early, not original. The proportions of this piece are outstanding, with its high legs and their graceful curve, the large cornice and proportion of top to bottom case, and are those of similar highboys classified as “Masterpiece” in A. Sack’s Fine Points of Furniture. Description: having a flat top over substantial layered cove and cavetto molding above two short drawers over three long drawers, the stand with one long drawer and three short drawers, the central drawer with concave fan carving over the apron, which is molded on three sides over cabriole legs ending in padded feet.. 70” h. x 39 3/8” w. (at knees) x 21 1/8” d. (at knees) . Upper case: 34 ¾” w. x 18 3/8” d., lower case: 37 ¾ w. x 18 3/8 d. More photos of this piece to come. | ||
